Give Me A Break
Summer plans: less content, more KitKats.
I’ve been writing a newsletter since the summer of 2021. That looks like creating and sending essays, updates, and marketing stuff 1-2 times a month, with only a few pauses. That means I’ve shared roughly 300 pieces of content over the past 6 years.
What a thing to be proud of, truly! I’ve seen my writing get better over time with consistency, and ever since making the switch to Substack almost three years ago, I’ve made even more connections and some really great internet friends. Overall, I enjoy this craft and expression of creativity.
And also, it feels like this season in 2026 is a real inflection point. I’m tired, I can’t keep up with all the digital things I’d like to, and the publishing of life and feelings on the internet just isn’t what it used to be. The explanation and analysis of putting time and effort into content creation only to have it be the tiniest little blip (in the event anyone actually sees it), alongside the awareness that pretty much everything is curated and we are being sold to 98% of the time… is an essay for another day. But what I do know is that this inflection point isn’t just happening for me.
More and more convos I have in my real life, people are feeling the same. Our preferred platforms are changing (many of them reaching enshittification status), the algorithms are who knows what anymore, and as Kate Moore shared in her All Their Things Interview last month, people want to be in their actual life.
Summer feels like the perfect time to take a break. Which is why I won’t be writing and sharing for the next few months.
LOL that I felt the need to update y’all with a whole dedicated post about it. Like couldn’t I have just not published anything and left it that? I’m sure it would have gone unnoticed and all would be well in the world.
But alas, old habits die screaming. And of course I’m slightly spiraling inside a little storm of cultural messages like…
“This is my slide into irrelevance.”
“If I’m not working on my writing how will it continue to develop?”
“When you stop posting, people stop being interested.”
“What about growth?!”
Thank you Anxiety for your feedback here, but you can go sit in your cozy chair with a cup of tea because Joy is about to take control of the brain board. And in the spirit of the reframe, I’ve made a list of my Summer dreams and plans to inspire IRL growth:
Sitting outside reading while the lower spine of a paperback gets damp resting on my wet bathing suit, while sweat pools in my underboobs.
Windows open, volume up with a nostalgic country playlist.
Breaking off a piece of that KitKat bar and licking the slightly melted chocolate off my fingertips.
Lying flat out in the yard, Touching Grass as the internet has labeled it.
Reapplying sunscreen throughout the day because putting it on once in the morning just doesn’t cut it anymore.
Not scheduling plans ahead of time in my color-coded calendar (I love her but she can take a break too), and instead just putting out in the moment calls and texts: “Ordering pizza to the community pool today, come join us!”
Oh I feel lighter already. Saying it out loud feels good. Being offline, hot, sweaty, and filled to the brim with snacks on a Summer day sounds so freaking wonderful right now. I know I’ll be melting my face off come July but I’m holding onto the fact that it will be worth it.
Let’s get off of here and get out there. Summer is waiting to welcome us with a sticky, sweet embrace. I hope yours is tasty and delightful. TTYL <3
